Sunday Thoughts

His Eye Is on the Sparrow

Civilla D. Martin, 1905

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Matthew 10:29-31 (New Living Translation)

What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

I love the sweet book illustration at the top. I am so impressed with how you turned this hymn into a desk 'pocket' for your sister, too. Such a lot of steps to it, though: I will admire it but not attempt.

Thanks for posting "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." Today is the 144th anniversary of the birth of Civilla Martin, the author. If you've never heard Ethel Waters' unique version of the song, I invite you to check it out on my hymn blog today, Wordwise Hymns.
